Meeting a Happy Angel

Lin-Chun Hsu    2011-08-29

I was once asked by a friend of mine of this question, "Why do flight attendants seem so hard to approach? They sometimes look very snobby. When I talked to them on the flight, they just ignored me."

I told him calmly, “It was not that they didn’t want to talk to you, but that they were just too tired to talk to you." Being a flight attendant sounds very stylish. Actually, this job is very hard. It requires staying up late. When the passengers are sleeping, they have to stay up the whole night. Then, they have to adjust themselves for jet lag and deal with the problems with their biological clocks. When they arrive at the destination, they may have to fly back in less than 24 hours.

Last trip, I flew from Bangkok to London. Because there were a lot of passengers on the flight, we needed to constantly provide service, so all of the red wine, white wine, and juice were gone, and all the sandwiches were eaten; not even one was left for us. We were hungry and tired. We joked that we walked all the way from Bangkok to London. When we arrived in London, we were all very exhausted. So we often joke about the fact that “we look glamorous on the plane but feel extremely exhausted after getting off the plane.” Besides, sometimes we are disheveled and look pale after a crisis. However, I still have the look and vitality of a 25-year-old lady even though I have been working in this industry for 13 years, because I have secrets for staying in good health. For this reason, I often become a consultant for new flight attendants.

Up in the air, in such a small space, we see all kinds of people. Our EQ has been put to the test constantly to see whether we have the wisdom to solve all problems. For example, the moment when passengers press the service button, they start to count how long it will take for the flight attendants to get to their seats. They usually report to the senior supervisor before we arrive to their seats and say that we are lazy. Sometimes we have tall and strong male passengers that ask us, “Miss, can you put the luggage up in the overhead compartment?” Some flight attendants just use their strength to lift it up without complaint. I often use a little wisdom. I will ask the passenger politely, “Sir! Can we put it up together?” He will say, “Oh, sure!” One time when we flew to London, we encountered a less pleasant situation. We had a passenger who did not get his meal. A newly hired flight attendant was very thoughtful and brought a vegetarian meal to him and asked if he would like to eat it. Unexpectedly, he had a bite, spit it out immediately, and said, “What...?” Then this flight attendant could not bear it and cried right on the spot. If you do not have the capability to adapt or react to various situations, you will soon want to quit the job as a flight attendant.

I have a very young and pretty co-worker who just joined us last year, and she is only in her early twenties. On one trip when the plane was about to arrive in Taiwan, she told me, “I suffer a lot whenever I fly.” I asked her why. “Because I feel very uncomfortable and every time when I am back home I get sick. I do not know what to do.” I said, “You are asking the right person. I have some tips. I am practicing Tai Ji Men Qigong.” Really, I once relied on practicing Tai Ji Men Qigong to save my life. My health used to be very bad. When I first became a flight attendant, I had rheumatoid arthritis and had swollen feet, swollen knees, and mouth lesions. I also had hives. After entering Tai Ji Men to practice qigong, these symptoms are gone. The most shocking thing was that I almost had a stroke when I was only in my twenties. Fortunately, practicing qigong saved my life. I told her, “Nowadays the environment is getting worse and worse. Sometimes even a cold can take a person’s life. You must find a way to let your body get healthy quickly.”

To my surprise, she had more serious problems. She said, “I feel that I'm so empty, and I do not know what I want to do.” Looking at this young and beautiful girl in her early twenties, I felt that poor health did affect a person psychologically. I told her, “You are very lucky to meet me.” I started to share my journey from feeling unhappy to being happy and the story about my learning qigong and wisdom from my Shifu. “I have a very good Shifu. My Shifu, Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze, told me that I am an angel. The wings of the airplane are my wings, and they allow me to fly to every corner of the world and bring the happiness and joy that I’ve learned to everybody.” I could see her eyes light up. I shared with her many of my cultural exchange experiences abroad. From 1999 to present, I have followed the footsteps of my Shifu, and I have visited many countries. For the past few years, Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze has guided his dizi to travel the five continents to promote love and peace. During the trips, we traveled with the Bell of Love and Peace that weighs about 240 kilograms. We hope that influential people around the world can all make a commitment to peace. Thinking good thoughts can improve the world. Under the influence of Shifu’s words and examples, I feel that I have really become an angel that promotes love and peace.

After I met my Shifu, I also met the happy angle hiding in my mind. The wisdom I learned from Shifu has enabled me to solve any problems and help a lot of people. In addition, Shifu teaches me the happiness in helping people. My life has become very valuable. On every trip I fly, I am always very happy because during the flight, I can learn a lot of things.

Figure: A happy flight attendant, Lin-Chun Hsu shared that Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze guided his dizi to travel the five continents to promote love and peace. Because of her Shifu’s teaching, she has brought the happiness and joy that she has learned to everybody. She feels that she has really become an angel that promotes love and peace.
