Lady and seven young men in black

I have been a nursing teacher and my students were, in the past, all young women. I never imagined that one day I would teach, or become the chief of student activities, at an agricultural and industrial school, where most students are young men. However, that’s exactly what happened to me and I have come to accept this change.

Last semester, soon after the school started, I came across an intense incident. I still remember it was the first time I wore a skirt and high heels to work. While I was enjoying the praises from my colleagues for my new "lady style," seven young men in black jackets entered the campus. All of them had evil looks on their faces. Since all the disciplinary teachers were in class, I had to deal with the situation alone.

I carefully invited the seven young men to sit down in teacher’s office. I showed my good will to them and asked about the purpose of their visit. They told me that their friend is new student here and he had a quarrel with another student, so they came to teach that student a lesson.

After practicing Tai Ji Men Qigong for years, I have learned to treat others with trust and respect. I also understand "wisdom comes from calmness of mind." After listening to their story, I thanked the seven young men for being so nice to their friend. Then I explained to them most of the new students did not know each other, some misunderstandings are prone to happen. I asked them to believe that teachers would help their friend and resolve the issue. As I was comforting them, the chief disciplinary teacher came back to the office. I was so glad that the seven young men finally felt calm about the matter. In the end, the chief disciplinary teacher and I saw them to the gate of the school. On the way out, I asked them about their life and learned that they had dropped out of the school. I felt sorry for them and encouraged them to pull themselves together and get back to school as soon as possible. When they got on their scooters to leave, we waved good-bye to each other. The atmosphere was peaceful and I knew I had prevented a terrible incident.

Later that day, with the help of the chief of disciplinary teacher and others, the two new students cleared up their misunderstanding and understood the severity of the matter. I guided them to find a good way to resolve the problem, which is to believe in, and to involve, teachers and parents when there is a problem. Then, we also learned something from this incident that teachers should ensure the students involved in dispute to talk to each other and apologize to each other. Once we remove barrier among people, goodwill will spread and flow freely, and that will help communication with each other. After the whole event, I am sure that people should use wisdom to resolve conflicts, and this have been the teaching of my Shi-Fu. Let’s let go of our self-righteousness and try to understand our difference. We will have a peaceful society.
