Learn to Use Wisdom

A while ago, the news reported that an unruly soldier, who served in Ginmen Island, instigated his friends to take revenge by breaking into the military camp. This incident ended in injuring nine soldiers and officers. This kind of action often happens simply because of blind impulses. The consequences are always tragic.

This news reminds me of one incident which happened to my son. My son is a university student in the south of Taiwan. One summer vacation, he planned to do a part-time job back in Taichung, so he wanted to move out of his apartment to save some money. It happened that one of his classmates needed a place to stay during the summer, so he asked to sublet my son’s room and my son could save the trouble of moving. My son trusted his classmate and accepted his suggestion.

At the end of the summer vacation, the host told my son that his rent was late. Only then my son found that his classmate had never moved in. Instead the friend had moved to a cheaper place without telling my son. My son was very angry and he wanted to argue with his classmate but didn’t know how to do well. Later he talked to me about this issue, I advised him to talk to the landlord nicely about what had actually happened.

The landlord felt my son’s sincerity and understood my son’s innocence, so the landlord promised to take only one and a half month of rent. Finally the problem was solved smoothly. Later, I told my son that school is also a small society, and coping with people is a lesson we must learn. Shouting in anger and clashes with others could not solve any problem; on the contrary, the problem could even get worse. I helped him with half of the payment and asked him to pay the other half by himself so that he took responsibility for his carelessness and learned the lesson.

Having gone through this experience my son becomes a calm and prudent person. Although it cost me some money, my son learned a good lesson. So I don’t think I lost anything.

I was glad that this situation could be solved smoothly. If it were in the past, I might have argued with the landlord or the classmate of my son and made things even more complicated. I used to have a bad temper and I tended to lose my head easily. I wanted everything to be fair; otherwise I would fight for my right and get very angry if I didn’t get what I wanted, making my family quite uneasy.

Now I practice qigong in Tai Ji Men. Through this practice, I have learned to stay in peace and use positive attitudes to overcome difficult situations and problems, and I also learn to communicate with others in a nice and easy way. Shifu teaches us many wisdoms of life, "Always think on the positive side. A step backwards gives you an open ground. Harmony is the most important." Although, I lost some money by paying extra rent, my son avoided starting a feud with others. I felt easy not having to worry about my son. Being able to live a carefree life is the most fortunate thing. And I also learned to be mother of wisdom!
